How can a battery cut your energy use and bills? More households than ever are considering adding a battery to supplement their solar PV system.

A household battery system stores electrical energy, often from a renewable energy source such as rooftop solar, but can also be charged with electricity from the grid. The energy is stored in the battery and can then be used later on to power appliances and other electrical systems in the home.

But how does a solar-battery system work?

In a typical home with solar panels, part or all of your energy usage may be met by solar generation while the sun is shining. Any excess solar energy is exported to the grid. Shortfalls, most often experienced in the early morning, evening, overnight or in cloudy weather, are met by importing electricity from the grid.

This is where a solar-battery system can help to save money.

When you add a battery to an existing rooftop solar system, or install rooftop solar panels and a battery together in a new system, the excess solar energy not used at home during the day can be used to charge the battery.

There are various energy storage products available that have a wide range of functionality and performance. Some batteries can be charged from grid electricity during off peak times (often overnight) on a time-of-use tariff when electricity is cheaper than during the day.

The energy stored in a solar-battery system is used in the home whenever there is energy usage above the level produced by the solar panels. This battery energy can power household appliances before any energy is required to be imported from the grid.

Once the stored energy is depleted, grid power (or an alternative generator) will supply household energy requirements until solar generation is available the next day.

If you already have a Solar Panel system installed, you may wish to connect it to a battery storage system so that you can collect and store your own energy. This is known as Retro Fitting. All Batteries come with an AC coupled control management system in order to retro fit into an existing system. This type of installation requires a controller to manage the solar battery’s flow of energy.

Maybe it is time for a battery upgrade. If you already have a Solar PV System installed along with battery storage, you may wish to add another battery to cope with your energy needs. Increasing your system’s storage capacity, is a great way to become energy independent and reduce your reliance on the National Grid.

What is a Solar Inverter?

A solar inverter is an electrical converter which changes the direct current (DC) electricity captured by solar panels, into alternating current (AC), which is the standard flow of electricity required for electrical circuits and domestic appliances

1. String Inverters

String inverters are the oldest form of inverter, using a proven technology that has been in use for decades. Solar panels are arranged into groups or rows, with each panel installed on a ‘string’. Multiple strings can be connected to a single inverter, which transforms the DC electricity produced by the panels into appliance-friendly AC electricity.

The downside of string inverters is that if the performance of one panel is reduced – for example by damage or shading, the performance of the whole array can be affected.

2. Micro Inverters

Micro inverters are becoming a popular choice in residential solar systems. These are fitted to each individual solar panel and convert DC to AC on the roof, removing the necessity of a separate inverter.

Because the conversion is performed this way, if one or more panels are affected by shade then it doesn’t have an impact on the panels that are still in sunlight. It’s also possible to monitor performance levels of every single solar panel.

Micro inverters are often considered as a way to install more solar panels on a roof. Panels that may be in partial shade for some of the day will not affect the performance of the other panels that remain in sunlight more of the time.

Micro inverters are still a relatively new technology and are generally more expensive than other inverter types, however, this additional cost may be offset by increased energy production.

3. Power Optimisers

Offering many of the benefits of microinverters, but slightly less expensive, power optimisers are also located on each individual panel. But instead of converting DC to AC at roof level, they move the DC to a string inverter. With power optimisers, you should be able to monitor the performance of each panel via an online portal.

New Solar PV Systems

Here at Millsons Group we offer solar PV design and installation service for new build properties and retrofit solar panels to existing homes.

Solar PV is the most popular smart energy technology installed in the UK. Over one million homeowners have now switched to solar panels to power their homes with free, clean energy generated by the sun.

Improved efficiency and advancements in technology mean that solar panels can be fitted almost anywhere and can take the form of glass, roof tiles, slates, membranes and more.

No matter which way your house is facing, energy prices are going north. Demand is increasing, resources are dwindling. It’s time for a rethink about your energy needs. The Sun gives us more than enough solar energy to power everything we do.

The sun’s energy is endless. We just have to tap it. Recently, solar panel prices have dropped dramatically and rapid advances in storage give you more power flexibility than ever before. More and more people are looking for sustainable ways of cutting their living costs and protecting the environment for future generations.

Protect The Planet

The Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC), NASA and the world’s leading scientists have warned us that if we continue to burn fossil fuels such as gas, coal, and oil we risk a man-made disaster of global scale.

We must increase and accelerate the rate at which we generate, store and distribute our energy from solar panels and other renewable sources if we are to avoid irreparable damage to our planet.
